On April 23, 2010, during the graduation ceremony of the 35th EMBA degree program at the HSG, the NZZ Prize 2010 was awarded to Detlef Gysau for his outstanding diploma thesis on "Differentiation strategy through the creation of additional value in the customer value chain".

The NZZ Prize 2010 was awarded to Detlef Gysau for his thesis on "Differentiation strategy through the creation of additional value in the customer value chain". The prize was awarded to him during the graduation ceremony of the 35th EMBA HSG on April 23, 2010 at the WBZ in St. Gallen. In his thesis, Detlef Gysau explored the question of how companies can better differentiate themselves from the competition. He did this with particular reference to Omya, Gysau's employer and a leading supplier of industrial minerals based on calcium carbonate and dolomite. Omya is also active worldwide in the distribution of specialty chemicals.
Detlef Gysau conducted a survey in five different areas of the respective value chain at seven companies in Central Europe. Seven possible activities emerged, which were evaluated as part of the thesis. These are activities that, for example, accelerate new product developments, identify opportunities to reduce CO2 emissions or make the logistics chain more flexible and efficient, which Omya is already examining for implementation in the company.
